Succubus

• Main character(Killer): Sara Millfield
• Key Victims: -Marc,15 years old, the geek.
-Dave,16 years old, rugby boy
-Tim,16 years old, is helped by Lisa

She is very attractive, she disguises herself as a young high-school girl who is in reality 105 years old. She wants to keep young because she doesn’t feel that she has lived her life enough. She sucks the soul out of young boys. Her real name is Patricia Godfield. Lisa and Tim realise the disappearance of male friends and are attempted to study the killers mysterious past. Set mostly in school’s in America and in the victims house.
The initial idea of the whole story was representing an over-turn in stereotypical male killers where we finally see a man as the victim and the woman as the killer. The jock jacket at the beginning signifies that he is the typical, popular jock, therefore, showing that the place and setting of the whole film is in a high school, signifying that the target audience is adolescents.
The story behind her killing him in the opening sequence, is her mistreated high school years by boys like the boy in the shower.
After the opening sequence, the main idea is to continue the film by presenting lives of teen-agers in high school and continuing with many cases of similar murders that we saw in the opening sequence.
We cut to the school corridor where we see Mark the geek being bullied by Dave the hunk who locks him in a school locker and walks away. The girl rescues the geek and seduces him by kissing him and asking him on a date, he accepts and runs away with embarrassment. The cool guy sees this and tries to chat her up due to jealousy but she plays hard to get and walks away.
We next see Mark and the girl in a cinema and she seduces him by touching him on the knee and drags him into the bathroom knowing that he is too shy and weak to say no. She kills him by stabbing him violently while smoke which is supposed to be his soul exhales out of his mouth .We see the girl next day at school with Dave the hunk who is trying to get her to go out with him but his girlfriend Lisa interrupts and fights with the girl, therefore she leaves. We next see Dave call the girl and ask her out, we cut to her on the phone looking at herself in the mirror and she notices wrinkles on her hand and some grey hair (shows her problem), she piles on some make-up and accepts to go out with him requesting to meet at a club. We then cut to the club where there is a lot of chaos and drugged up people with hard-core techno playing. Dave walks through the crowd and sees her face through the crowd. She indicates to go upstairs. We cut to them walking into a dark, stingy room with a dim light. A close-up of them kissing and then we only see the dim light and we hear her stabbing him violently while he screams and then she leaves the room.
Next day she is in the corridor flirting with Tim, a new character who is the friend of Lisa, this is where Lisa starts to suspect this girl. The next day, Lisa walks up to the girl insulting her and asks her lots of questions about herself, she sees the wrinkles on her hand and the girl notices this and runs away. We cut to Lisa researching on the internet for this girl’s past but can’t find anything matching her fake name. She finds a book in the library which talks about this kind of power. The book says that she can only be destroyed by being called by her real name. She realises that she has to do research in the girl’s house to find her real name. She tells Tim the situation and asks him to help her, so he asks the girl on a date and takes her to his house. Lisa breaks into the girl’s house and finds all sorts of papers…. We see Lisa finally finding the real name and runs to Tim’s house. When she arrives, she is beaten up by the girl and Tim manages to get out of the bed and gets the papers and screams out her name. We see the girl shrivel up on the floor and loose all souls of her victims through exhaling the smoke.

The final idea for the horror film

My idea for a horror film was based on a girl who is actually and old woman who disguises herself as a young 18 year old, and in order to keep young, she takes the virginity from innocent boys who then after their relations, become mummified and some sort of strange creature. This idea was made to oppose everything stereotypical in everyday horror films: gender, religion and science. In my idea, I contrast the idea of having to be a man to kill, by placing a young weak looking girl to replace this. In horror films, there is a belief that if you are a virgin you are "good", while in my idea, I brought about a change making the virgins the immediate victims.

What is a horror film?

The main ideas of a horror film are: delivers high levels of gore, the fear of a monster or a stranger, or the body being ripped to pieces. These apply to the audiences fears and allow them to see these terrors from a safe distance.
The ideology of this, is to show the subtle messages within which include punishment, rejection and revulsion. These all fall into where 'correct' thinking is supposed to take place. For example: in a simple horror film, the promiscuous, drug-taking and drinking characters, are always killed off before hand, while the religious, good virgins, always survive till the end. This demonstrates how the plot is trying to send out a message to say that 'sex is bad, being a virgin is good.'

Horror films also alter our fears of strangers or hitchhikers who always appear to be 'murderers' or 'rapists'. In a horror film, the stranger is always the villain, making them a stereotype and reenforcing our knowledge of what we have grown-up with about not talking to strangers. It is the same when we talk about religion. The expectations of the world are to follow the traditional christian religion, and by doing this you are 'good'. This is demonstrated in horror films by destroying any deviant religion which is also considered the 'bad side' of the storyline.

With the new technologies nowadays, the audience immediately expects every problem to be fixed via science. This is why older beliefs such as: religion or superstition, have been replaced with the modern belief of the power of science. This is why when in a film the supernatural is defeated with psychological power rather than a Latin spell.
The modern version of horror industry draws in huge audiences due to it's continual re-invention and re-creating of every successful horror film.

This slideshow shows my presentation to an idea of a horror film which then became our main idea to do the group work to make an opening sequence of a horror film. This powerpoint explains the idea of this girl who is in actual fact an old woman who diguises herself as a young girl. Her crime is that she has relations with random boys who have to be virgins, giving her the power to keep young, however, the victims die and dry up becoming a nasty creature in order to her sucking out of virginity.

Preliminary Post Productions

The Rushes are uploaded to the Fianl Cut Server from which you can access and Edit Proxy of the raw footage which you can then open in Final Cut Pro to begin the editing/post production process.

  • Continuity Editing is important for the clarity of the footage, such as: connecting all the same points to the storyline, to shorten space and time, to make the audience to identify with the right characters and to make sure the story makes sense.

Selecting and rejecting different scenes from the footage is important because there may be some better takes and some bad ones which may not want to be included. A way to do this would be to watch the scenes and cut every scene you want and finally putting it into a "Log Bin" which is practically a new folder where all the wanted takes are put in to then follow with putting them together. The next step is to find the "best fit" which is the process of putting together the same scene but with different frames, keeping the movement smooth by following the movement of the character. For example, a man picking up something, close-up on him reaching for it then close-up on the object and finish the movement.

  • Organising the shots

We tried to follow the storyboard as much as possible. There was also the choice of shots to show which side the audience was supposed to be on. To do this, we did many over the shoulder shots from the bad guys side as if to show the other person were threatened by them. We chose the shots also according to pace and how to build up tension. In order to do this, we did quick cuts when tension built up in the discussion between the characters, this will give the same effect on the audience. We initially did close-ups of the characters to show their relationship and secondly building up tension by adding some wide-shots to show the situation of the scene. We cut from the door handle to her reaction in order to create a threatning effect. We decided to cut from her's to his close-ups at a fast pace to show the relationship between them in that moment.

By the end of our Preliminary task, looking back on it there were some bumps which affected the quality of the seqeunce. Such as: the crane shot, the short zoom on the body on the floor looked quite cheap and badly edited. There are some benefits about these shots seeing that we learnt new ones

Preliminary Task Evaluation

Our preliminary task was shot in the studio which to me was the most appropriate and useful location to film in because of the made-up set which made it more realistic.
At the beginning of the task I felt a bit awkward and a bit self-conscious about talking to the actors in a "bossy" manner, but as it went on I realised how there was a limit of time and that it had to be done, therefore I tried to take part in it as much as possible: I helped the actors with their lines and positioning them to get the same shot every time. The role that I played mostly was the director.

Lighting:
In the studio, there is one bright light right in the middle of the set which gave a hard effect which was adapted to the scene we were doing, and because there is a window in the set, there was a white light on the outside of it to show daytime.
The importance of lighting is the effect and feel the it gave to the scene. The light in the middle helped outline the actors and create a sharpness to it.
Personally, I thought that there was a lack of shadows and the light might have been too revealing.

Filming:
There were no problems with the camera and it was set up correctly and up-straight. I did not work much on the camera however I checked mostly the continuity of the frames in order to get the same actions every shot. We bubbled the tripod, this means that we get the tripod exactly into level. We checked if our angles were right and by using a storyboard, we easily put into place what shots we had to do in order. We started off with a long-shot to then move to an over the shoulder shot on both actors in order to get a view of both them. We also used a third actor who played a dead body in-between them to make sense to the lines and have more effect on the shots. We continued by doing some close-ups. Since we had one more shot of our own choice, we decided to do a shot from the top of the ladder to make it look like a crane-shot. The 180 degrees rule was hard to avoid since we were working on a fixed set which had only three walls.
We made use of the terminology to make sure that everyone knew when and what to say or do. "Stand by", everyone gets ready, "role camera" everyone has to be in position and camera starts recording for five seconds until "action" is said and the scene starts. After the scene is done the director is supposed to wait five seconds and then say "cut"; this is when the camera is completely stopped.

Camera work

This image on the left would be considered a long-shot but done from a low angle. It would give and effect of belittling because taking a photo from below could make the subject of the photograph taller and in some way makes us the audience feel that the subject is in control.

This on the right is another example of a long-shot, however it would be more considered to be a medium-long shot. This angle of shot, is shown to represent a story, or show the setting from a distance for the audience to understand the atmosphere and plot.

This is a close-up which reveals head to shoulders to focus on the subject in the photograph. Usually there is nothing visible behing in order to reveal the point of view of the audience to witness the action and emotion of the caharcter.

This would be called a low-angle shot which conveys agian, a belittling to the audience. This subject is in control and also can make the audience feel that this is the protagonist. If it were a film, this would be called a tilt-shot, which is a way to represent something, for example: a person from head to toe.

This is a crane-shot. Just by the the name, we can understand that it has something to do with height. A camera is mounted onto a crane. It can be moved up and down and side to side in order to make a dramatic effect.

Horror Film Poster

The only effect that this poster is supposed to make you feel is mainly fear.
With the face of Leaya Hatzakis in the eye, the audiene is supposed to feel like they are this person and feel as if they were living in it.
By only showing the eye, this can give an effect of mystery because you cannot see the rest of the face, but by doing this, it is obvious to the audience that this is the enemy.
The title and subtitle are supposed to make the audience pay attention to the poster. For example, in the eye, we can see a face but the subtitle catches the audiences curiosity because it is faded in.
We can also see the extra images have been added and faded in, in order to give the audience a sort of prewiew of the movie.
